Accordions from Around the World

Accordionist in Bryant Park

Accordionist in Bryant Park

This charming event has returned to Bryant Park.  Through the end of August at 5:00 each Wednesday, you can wander through the park, listening to accordion players from around the world – Japan, Turkey, Brazil, Colombia, USA, Germany, France – followed by a concert at 6:00.  I went several times last year, and had a blast.  It was fun to listen to the different styles such as musette, zydeco, tango, and bluegrass.  Several of the players are traditional, but a number are also incorporating classical and jazz music in their repertoires.  Because the players do come from around the world, there’s lots of variety, even among those playing “folk” music.  Strolling around from one station to another is encouraged, so if you don’t like a particular player, you don’t have to feel guilty about getting up and leaving.
